Horror Depicted Through Art

Each Artist has their own depiction of horror that can be perceived differently from person to person. Some depict gruesome images of demented people, others may depict figures perceived to be evil through either the scope of religion or by societal constructs. Each painting here has depicted its horror relative to its time period, so while it may not appear scary relative to today keep in mind that it may have been much more frightening in earlier years. the objective of this gallery is to introduce the audience to another centuries horror or dark linked paintings.

Horror can also be described as something that causes fear and causes people to be scared. Death can be also be a horror to the people who don't want to die. There are innocent people that are not ready to face the horror of death just like Francisco Jose Goya Y Lucientes paintings of The Third of May 1808 during the Napoleonic wars. This can mean, meeting Satan or the Devil in the afterlife. It can even mean not living life to the fullest.

The art each artist painted can be perceived as dark and scary. There are anatomical parts that can result as scary to the person that is seeing it for the first time or not accustomed to it. There are gruesome images of decomposing parts that were studied by Theodore Gericault. It was a time of realism which brought upon a truth of the dead.

Horror can also be a seen as a superstition and/or evil. Just like in Henry Fuseli's paintings of The Weird Sisters. It gives a sense of how evil can be seen as deception. Also witches just like in Francisco Goya's painting "Atropos(The Fates), which gives a sense of life and death. There is also a use of demon like figures where it projects more darkness into the painting, thus is seen in Henry Fuseli artwork the "Midnight" painting. There is a superstition on how death can be brought in anytime  by the god named Atropos who decided the fate of death given to anyone. There were myths of how gods would bring upon death which scared and horrified the people which included Francisco Jose de Goya.

Finally, though the time period of each artist, they depict their own sense of horror. Horror can anything they perceived as scary or even the audience. Evil can also be a source of horror that can be shown from a religion or by societal constructs. Often William Blakes work depicted such, with constant paintings of the evil and sinful people or figures. Evil conquering good was a mainstay for his works. There can be a difference between the horror of today and the horror of the Early, Mid, or Late 1800's. The objective of the gallery to present to the audience the darkness of horror of the paintings from the 18 centuries.
