In my gallery group, we decided to choose a theme that would be horror-themed where the artist would use dark images. I decided to look for a painter who was known for its art to be dark and give a frightful mysterious outcome. I was also focused to find an artist that fell in the seventies to nineties era. Henry Fuseli portrays multiple characteristics into his artwork, such as images of demons, lifeless eyes, and mythological creatures portraying a dark quality of the art.
     There is a use of demon-like creatures into Fuseli's artwork, its a character in the painting that is put into the spotlight. This is very seen in “The Nightmare” made in 1781, in this piece, there's a demon-like creature that is dark painted on top of a sleeping woman. The position where Fuseli posed the creature is in the middle of the painting, it is evident that there is a reason why he placed it there. There can be multiple explanations to this painting but most explain it to be the reason why the lady is having a nightmare, which is because there is a demon nearby.

     Eyes are the central part of a person's face, you can absorb a lot about how someone is feeling by someone's eyes. Artist uses eyes to show some emotion behind their artwork, Fuseli is one of them. Fuseli has multiple pieces of art that show this, for example, Constance, The Weird Sisters, Lady Macbeth with the Dagger. These pieces affect for you to concentrate on their eyes. It has an aftereffect where you can feel the fright in their eyes and others, there is a sense of lifeless eyes. You can just see the horrified face where there is no hope or faith in them.
     There is the use of mythological characters in Fuseli's art, he has several paintings of “The Weird Sisters”. These three characters represent evil and mischief, they are known for deceiving people when they come to them for a favor. They are between the line between reality and the supernatural. Fuseli found inspiration from the story of Macbeth and painted them in multiple ways. One of his artworks shows the three weird sisters pointing at a direction and another hand in their lips to show that one must be quiet. Since the weird sisters are witches it creates a dark art image to the audience.
     There are multiple ways that an art piece can be described as dark, but most of the basic starters of dark art and characteristics Henry Fuseli implements them into his art. In his art, you will see a use of demons like figures, drastic spotlight into the character's eyes and also the use of mythological creatures that have been mention commonly before to people in their life. Most of Fuseli's artwork is in use of supernatural forces that inspired him, his most known art was around the 1770s to 80s.
